Course Description: Good administrative misconduct (IA) investigations are the cornerstone for transparency, accountability, public trust, community support, and reducing organization liability. This course provides fundamental investigative techniques that have been successfully used to complete basic and complex internal investigations. Best practices will be shared along with hands-on practical application and tools that can be put to use immediately. This class is the first in a series of two internal affairs investigation courses.
This is a highly interactive/hands-on, course. Through facilitation, group discussion, and team exercises attendees learn the fundamentals of internal affairs investigations, breaking down complex investigations, creating an interview matrix, and writing a comprehensive report. Templates will be shared for a variety of investigations such as Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Use of Force, criminal complaints, and others.
IA-101 Course objectives:
Participants will have the opportunity to develop a basic understanding of;
- The role and history of misconduct investigations in law enforcement
- Responsibility for investigating and identification of complaints
- Using templates / best practices for various types of investigations
- How to prepare for and conduct effective interviews
- Why and how to develop an interview matrix
- Conducting investigations into criminal matters
- Handling administrative evidence
This class is for Law Enforcement Professionals (sworn and non-sworn)
- With limited or no internal affairs experience and or training (this is an introductory course)
- Responsible for Internal affairs investigations
- Interested in law enforcement internal affairs investigations
- Interested in best practices for internal affairs investigations
- Interested in practical (hands-on) experience in conducting and writing internal affairs investigations
The computer used during class must have a camera and microphone for WebEx online sessions, PowerPoint, and Word.
Classroom location: In the comfort of your home or office! LIVE Online course. For your convenience, upon request, a session may be provided for later review to accommodate vacation/leave, etc.

When you click ‘Join Meeting’ in your email, it will open a page to engage in the meeting.
If you don’t have Webex installed, it will automatically download the file. You can click and install the file if you have permission to do so on your computer. This will give you the best viewing experience with the class.
If you wish to download the app and pre-install it, you can click here. Choose Webex Meetings and follow the installation prompts.
If you do have the software pre-installed, the web browser will detect it and ask if you want to open the meeting in the software. Click ‘Open Cisco Webex Start’ to get into the meeting.
If you cannot install or utilize the software, you can click on ‘Join from your browser’ and it will open the meeting.
It will prompt you for permission to access your camera and microphone. You will need to allow this to participate in the meeting.
You can then enter your name and email address and click ‘Next’ to join the meeting.
When you connect, you can control your microphone and video status from the bar at the bottom of the screen. While in the meeting, you can get the speaker’s attention by clicking on the button with the three vertical dots and selecting ‘Raise Hand’. By clicking on the middle button (person symbol) you can see the other participants in the session. You can also message the presenter or attendees during the session using the chat bubble (blue) as well.
Please mute your microphone when you connect. You can un-mute it when you have a question.
